Zusammenfassung:
Many applications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) have been developed in the past and are commonplace today in many domains both in urban and rural areas. However, although applications for UASs in urban areas are plentiful, their realization is still limited by the lack of methods and technology that enables safe and reliable monitoring and managing of the airspace. In this context, obtaining and verifying the positions and movements of all UASs in the airspace in real-time is essential but currently not possible. In order to overcome this problem, drone-to-drone communication plays a key role. Hence, in the VEREDUS project, a solution for direct drone-to-drone communication was developed including the design of hardware, antennas and software. The performance of the network was assessed using a traffic and network simulator. In this paper, we present the core requirements and challenges identified in the project and sketch a solution that serves both current real-world UAS applications as well as future UAS networks.
