LES for Acoustics

Zusammenfassung:
Due to the increasing importance of noise predictions there is a growing interest in robust and efficient computaional aeroacoustic methods. The currently applied numerical approaches range from extremly costly direct numerical simulation to hybrid approaches which solve time-averaged governing equations to obtain the near-flow field and a wave propagation equation which is fed by a synthetic turbulent flow field. The most popular methods in computational aeroacoustics are briefly reviewed. Special emphasis is given to subgrid scale models for large eddy simulations (LES), since this technique seems to be perfectly suited to calculate large scale turbulent fluctuations which dominate as a noise source in many problems. Finally some examples of recently performed noise predictions based on LES are given.
