PIV Measurement of the Flow Field around an Airship Model

The aerodynamic characteristics of large airship models can be evaluated in wind tunnels. A detailed flow velocity distribution reveals the inflow condition to the propeller engines or the flow around the empennage. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) can be used to determine flow velocity fields in addition to the common force or pressure measurements. A model of the "Cargo Lifter" was used in a large scale wind tunnel to investigate the flow by PIV. The complete 20 flow field around the airship was measured in a vertical section. Regions near the inlet of the propeller engines and around the empennage were measured in a horizontal setup. The detailed flow velocity fields, can be used to optimize the design of the airship geometry.
