Titel:

Concerning the Use of Hydrogen Gas in Airships: Past and Future Aspects

Autor(en):
D. Spaltmann, R. Grün
Zusammenfassung:
Although widely used as a resource in chemical industry and accepted as a clean energy source for cars, the public attitude towards Hydrogen changes, if it comes down to the use in airships. For Hydrogen to be used as carrier gas in airships again, this paper briefly summarizes the latest developments in efforts to elucidate the role Hydrogen played in the Hindenburg disaster (past aspect). In order to show how safe Hydrogen really is, some of its features are compared with those of other commonly and widely used fuels. Although the mixtures of Hydrogen with Oxygen are highly flammable, it will be lined out that Hydrogen has "built-in" features that render it safer than other types of fuels. This should allow in future the dual use of hydrogen as carrier gas and fuel (future aspect). Aside from availability and affordability this dual use is its major advantage over Helium and will enable profitable use of airships.
