Titel:

Promising Lifting Body Configuration for Hybrid Airship Application

Zusammenfassung:
This paper describes the aerodynamic features of a specially designed lifting body, for hybrid airship applications. Using a biological analogy to describe the hybrid character of a hybrid airship, one can say that it is like breeding two different organisms and combining them together. Hence, melting an airplane into an airship produces an aircraft with traits and vantages from both parents and with a certain distribution between static and aerodynamic lift. The investigated lifting body was designed to combine the vantages of high efficient cruise and the VTOL ability of airships, with the vantages of the good wind stability, ground handling and high cruise speeds of airplanes. The initial design was modeled using the CAD tool CATIA V5 and analyzed after a CFO computation with FLUENT. A huge internal volume at as less skin fricfon drag as possible was the major constraint and one of the basic design requirements which have been achieved. The CFO computation leads to an extensive aerodynamic database with all required values and charts to evaluate the overall concept. Finally, the paper suggests a possible and highly potential application of the investigated configuration.
