A Lander Vehicle for Various Lunar Missions

Zusammenfassung:
Over recent years, Astrium Bremen have performed numerous studies towards lunar landing vehicles for various Moon missions ranging from small science missions over full scale deployment of a lunar radio telescope on the far side to logistic support for manned missions. This paper will concentrate on the most promising lander vehicles for the mid-term future. Considering European launch vehicles, it is immanent that only landers based on the Ariane 5 launcher can deliver a significant payload to the lunar surface. The lander would be designed to enable easy unloading operations, either automatic or with support from the crew on the lunar surface. The lander could also be used for independent European missions, such as the installation of robotic science instruments on the moon. The payload mass available on the lunar surface would depend on the Ariane 5 version used, from the current ECA to future versions as the ME, ranging from 1500 kg onwards. A ten year development plan, including a demonstration mission by the middle of the next decade, could allow the Lunar Logistic System to be operational by 2020, on time for the initial crewed operations on the lunar surface.
