Zusammenfassung:
Consideration is given to high velocity penetrators as potential probes of solar system bodies. Penetrators offer a low cost alternative to soft landers and provide a complementary capability. However, penetrators have not yet been proven off-world and represent a significant technical challenge. Penetrators may be applied to both airless bodies and planets/moons that have an atmosphere above a solid surface. Both situations are discussed and the major challenges explored. In preparation for the proposed UK-led MoonLITE mission, a number of full scale high speed impacts trials were carried out in the UK. The results of these very successful trials are also discussed.
