The ACARE environmental goals (50% less C02 , 50% less perceived noise, 80% less NOx) require a joint approach by all aviation stakeholders (manufacturers, operators, airports, ATM, research, etc.). Aircraft industry contributes with improvements in weight, aerodynamics, engines and systems. The example of the A380 shows the significant progress achieved in noise reduction technology. Global emissions are in the focus of public attention; aviation contributes with 2% of global man-made C02 emissions. Since these are proportional to fuel consumption, the economic objective to save fuel gives in the same time environmental benefits. Roughly 10% of emissions reduction can be obtained by ATM measures. Further improvements will be obtained with new systems like fuel cells.
