Titel:

On the Use of Adaptive Aeroelastic Structures to Optimise Aeroelastic Performance

Autor(en):

Zusammenfassung:
This paper describes part of a research programme investigating the development of "adaptive internal structures" concepts to enable adaptive control of the aeroelastic shape of lifting surfaces. A number of different concepts have been considered that permit the bending and torsional stiffness of aircraft wings to be controlled through changes in the internal aircraft structure. It is shown how the static aeroelastic behaviour can be controlled to enable the aerodynamic performance (lift and/or drag) to optimised throughout the entire flight envelope. A number of computational and experimental studies are described that demonstrate the viability of the adaptive aeroelastic structures concept and provide directions for future studies.
