Titel:

Impact of Multiple Winglet Configurations on Civil Air Transport

Zusammenfassung:
A new assessment of multiple winglet configurations identifies an underestimated potential to improve the performance of civil transport aircraft with a large reduction of induced drag. Using the deflected mass flow momentum model as alternative model for evaluation of the induced drag, it is found that classic tools (e.g. tools using a wake model neglecting the u-perturbation or experiencing numerical wake dissipation) do strongly underestimate the effect of stream wise staggered multiple winglets on induced drag. With verified span efficiencies in the range of 1.5 to 3 it appears feasible to break the square cube law and increase the life span of Cayley type aircraft configurations.
