Drag Prediction and Wake Survey Techniques

This paper focuses on methods to calculate the drag components from flow field wake measurements. For many years, ONERA has developed an original method which aims at improving the understanding of local flow phenomena and wakes. This approach consists in writing the drag and the lift in terms of variables measured inside the wake to determine viscous, wave and lift-induced drag components The first part of the paper is devoted to the theoretical formulations. The second part is dedicated to the wall influence on induced drag, in wind tunnel. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) is done to foresee these effects. In the last part, several examples are presented with subsonic and transonic tests. An original method allows the extraction of viscous and wave components from the profile drag to be carried out.
