Modern aircraft have become faster and more agile, and consequently, are flying more often in conditions of separated flow. The wing experiences buffeting response under conditions of separated flow. The structural loads caused by buffeting are important design limit load and fatigue load conditions. Under these demanding flight environments, severe buffet can drastically reduce the fatigue life of the airframe. New aircraft development programs require the earliest definition of these buffet loads in the structural sizing of aircraft.
