Aeroelastic Computations of a T-Tail Configuration in the Compressible Flow

In this paper, vibration and aeroelastic analyses of a T-tail configuration have been conducted in the compressible flow region. The structural dynamic computations of the T-tail are performed using MSC/NASTRAN. Dynamic aeroelastic computations based on the advanced CFD/CSD coupling approach are also performed to investigate the detailed aeroelastic phenomena of the T-tail. It is shown that the modal coupling between the torsional mode of vertical tail and the asymmetric bending mode of horizontal tail tends to give major flutter instability of the T-tail configuration. Physical dynamic aeroelastic responses are presented and the characteristics of flutter instabilities are examined for a generic T-tail model.
