Zusammenfassung:
The theme of the 23rd ICAF Symposium, "Lessons Learned in 50 Years after the Comet Accidents," forms the basis for this paper. One such lesson is that one must design for fatigue in compression load dominated structure. It is well known that metal fatigue is most closely associated with cyclic tensile stresses so the trend has been to overlook compression loaded structure in fatigue design. The authors have come into contact with several cracking occurrences at structural details that were thought to be resistant to fatigue because they were primarily loaded in compression.
