Zusammenfassung:
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium sheets on the fatigue performance of the fiber metal laminate GLARE®. Series of crack initiation, crack propagation, and repeated shear buckling tests were carried out. The achieved results were compared with the properties of base GLARE® laminates. Although, base GLARE® and GLARE® with FSW exhibited similar test results in several instances, it was found that different FSW process parameters can influence the quality of the FSW joint in particular specimens and, therefore, their performance in fatigue. Hence, the FSW process for thin sheets requires optimisation. However, the int1uence of potential strength reductions at the weld line is almost negligible in welded GLARE, because the welds of the different aluminium sheets are staggered. Further more, the static failure of any fiber metal laminate should be fiber dominated, which gives less importance to the aluminium strength.
