Titel:

Acoustics Predictions using less than LES

Zusammenfassung:
The methodology presented in this paper is motivated by the high cost of traditional large eddy simulation (LES) and the understanding that routine engineering predictions of acoustic disturbances arising from realistic Reynolds number flows will require methods with a cost substantially less than that of LES. This paper outlines an approach in this direction, based on a form of very large eddy simulation (VLES) in which synthetic, or artificially-generated, turbulence is used to fill in the unresolved portion of the wavenumber spectrum. The approach follows recent developments in hybrid RANS/LES, but offers the additional advantage of allowing even coarser meshes whilst still adequately describing the state of the near-wall turbulence. Furthermore, the approach provides the ability to constitute noise from the missing (unresolved) scales.
