The application of non-linear aerodynamic methods in aeroelasticity invalidates some simplifying assumptions made in the calculation of aeroelastic efficiency factors. In this paper, expressions for aeroelastic efficiencies which do not rely on a linear relation between aerodynamic load and mesh deflection are formally derived. A series expansion is used to efficiently approximate the exact, iterative solution. The expression requires a derivative of the load-deflection function. For a 3D panel method, an analytical solution for this derivative is given. With these components, it is shown how the sensitivity of aeroelastic efficiencies with respect to structural design variables can be cast into an efficiently calculated analytical formula. These sensitivities permit inclusion of non-linear aerodynamic methods in structural optimization with aeroelastic constraints.
