Zusammenfassung:
In a Virtual Cockpit Simulation an Airbus A340 cockpit (Schiefele, 1998) is simulated. The entire cockpit, displays, and a visual are modeled as 3D geometry or displayed as textures. To generate a force feedback a "Seating Buck" was built. Only the seat, side-sticks, pedals, and thrust levers are physically available. All other buttons and knobs are simulated by plastic panels. The usability of most virtual environments for training is unproven. Virtual environments usually suffer from lack of HMD resolution, FOV, tracker lag, and missing force feedback. All these system parameters were optimized to make the system usable for training. To determine pilot performance and transfer of training from the virtual cockpit environment into a real flight simulator two experiments were conducted. A group of professional Lufthansa pilots and a group of novices flew the two simulators. All test persons had to fly four standard flight tasks and answer subjective strain questionnaires. Results indicate that pilot performance is (significantly) reduced by an on average 10% higher error rate. However, none of the pilots lost aircraft control. Novice pilots transfer training from the virtual flight simulator into a conventional flight simulator.
