Fin Buffet Loads Obtained from Measured Turbulent Flowfields

Zusammenfassung:
A method to predict fin buffet aerodynamic loads is presented based on measured turbulent velocity fields only. The investigation is performed on a model of a high performance single-flnned delta-canard configuration. Using hot-wire anemometry fluctuating velocities are measured in the fin region resultlng in a detailed description of the properties of the buffet-inducing flowfield. The fin buffet pressures are obtained employing an advanced lifting surface method. Its input is defined by the amplitude spectra of fin local incidence calculated from the measured velocities. Consequently, the method provides rms values and power spectral densities of fluctuating surface pressure and of normal force. It is shown that fin buffet pressures increase signiflcantly with increasing angle of attack. At high-[alpha] the buffet load spectra show strong narrow-band peaks. These peaks are related to quasi-periodic fluctuations present in the flow of the hurst wing and canard leading-edge vortices approaching the midsection. The results obtained agree very well with direct measured fin buffet pressures. This gives strong evidence that fin buffet loads can be determined with adequate accuracy by the approach suggested here.
