The European Research Establishements have recognized the growing trend towards the rationalisation of the Aerospace industry across Europe. The seven major Aerospace Research Establishements (DLR, FFA, DRA, ONERA, CIRA, INTA) have responded to this by forming an association to improve the co-ordination and management of research programmes and facilitites in a way that supports the European Aerospace Industry, and the desires of EU governments to build a more coherent European aerospace technology base. This association, the Association of European Reseach Establishements in Aeronautics, AEREA, was set up as an initiative of the establishements, presented to and supported by the CEC Commissioner for Research and welcomed by the Industry Association AECMA. The members recognise the importance of supporting both industry and national Governments and pan-European organisations. This support includes participation in Framework programmes, contract support to industry, independent advice on technology and the formulation and conduct of research on aeronautical matters. These all areas where the establishements have worked separately in the past, but are now able to gain the synergy of working in a more coherent pan - European manner. ·This paper will describe the moves towards the more coherent European approach to Aeronautics research and describe some of the programmes and capabilities available within the European Aeronautical Research Establishements.
