Several research projects have been performed or are ongoing to investigate the impact of aircraft emissions on the environmental and climatological state of the atmosphere. This paper summarizes results from the projects AERONOX (1992-1994), POLINAT (1994-1995), and the ongoing atmospheric research within the project "Schadstoffe in der Luftfahrt" (1992- 1997). The general knowledge on the present impact of world-wide air traffic emissions on the large scale properties of the atmosphere (excluding noise and regional pollution near airports) is briefly summarized.
