GEC-Marconi Defence Systems has been involved in the acquisition of a variety of data in airborne platforms for many years. This paper sets out the general requirements of the Modular Data Acquisition System (MODAS) today and into the immediate future. The data acquisition requirements of the system have utilised conventional reel-to-reel IRIG recording for many years, which have provided excellent service over widespread applications from transport aircraft to helicopters and fast jets. Newer recording machines using cassette tape media are now coming into use. The wide range of configurations means that cassette based digital recording, cost and ease of use as well as performance are major considerations.
