Zusammenfassung:
We discuss the propagation of sound in shear flows (§1), with particular emphasis on the critical layers where wave reflection or absorption can occur (§2). We start with a linear shear (§3), using a decomposition into even and odd solutions, as a simpler approach than those is the literature 7,10,11,12,16. We proceed to consider three "new" problems, not previously addressed in the literature: (§4) an exponential profile, corresponding to a boundary layer with suet ion, leading to a continuous spectrum; (§5) a parabolic shear, corresponding to a flow duct, with discrete spectrum; (§6) since all of the preceding cases concern shear flows of low Mach number, we also exhamine a linear shear flow with high-subsonic, transsonic or supersonic Mach number. We conclude with some remarks on the triggering of shear flow instabilities by sound waves (§7).
