Titel:

Application of Turbulence Closure Models in Aerodynamics: Time for Requiem or for a New Ode?

Autor(en):
K. Hanjalic
Zusammenfassung:
The paper reviews some recent developments in turbulence closure modelling relevant to lowspeed external aerodynamics, and examines possible reasons for a slow adoption of more advanced models into the designers practice. Some modelling issues are discussed in conjunction with several specific flow phenomena, the prediction of which has for long posed serious challenge to designers and technology developers in aerospace industry. Discussed will be performances of some more recent models which brought substantial improvements in predicting some of the "notorious" turbulent flow phenomena, reviving the interest of potential users in statistical closure models. A companion paper by Jakirlic, Hadzic and Hanjalic, appearing in this proceedings, will provide additional illustration by presenting a new version of the general-purpose second-moment closure with a number of successful applications. Some new developing directions are also briefly discussed.
