Titel:

Zusammenfassung:
Within the ELFIN program, a FOKKER 100 aircraft was equipped with a laminar-flow glove. During the first flight tests, the laminar-flow region was smaller than expected. This was attributed to the waviness of the glove surface. The surface was then improved and, with the refinished surface, a larger laminar-flow region resulted. In this paper, we evaluate the results obtained with the original and with the refinished glove using linear stability theory. We show that a bulge which should be tolerable by Carmichaels criterium actually caused early transition, from which we have deduced that the criterium is not rigorous enough. Furthermore, we perform a parametric study of the influence of a bulge by varying its shape, height, and position, and we compare the influence of a bulge with the one of a hollow and a single wave.
