The use of GPS integrated systems for precision approach and landing is, from the technical point of view, no longer a problem. It could be proved that such an integrated system can be used for all weather approach guidance. However, the discussions have moved from the question of accuracy to the operational aspects, which are of main interest for the aviation certification authorities. To give assisting technical knowledge to these authorities, the Institute of Flight Guidance and Control of the University of Braunschweig has got a contract from the German Ministry of Research and Technology. Under this contract, the operational aspects of using Differential GPS for precision approaches of general aviation aircraft were investigated. Results of these operational investigations are demonstrated in this paper. It will be shown, that even from the safety point of view satellite navigation can be used for precision approaches. Research results on the problem of the integrity of this integrated system with respect to complete GPS failures are presented. It is of main interest for any certification authority to know how the positioning accuracy decreases when the GPS ground station or the airborne receiver fail. Partial failures due to satellite masking and total failures are distinguished. The occuring errors are related to the ICAO requirements. As the positioning accuracy depends on a number of parameters, ground and flight test results are presented to demonstrate the influence oflatitude, time of day, multipath, propagation errors and different baselines as well as combination of different receivers. The test results are discussed relating to the requirements for precision approaches of aircraft.
