Transrapid, Technology versus Economics

Zusammenfassung:
Readiness for application of the TRANSRAPID Maglev system was certified by the German Federal Railways after intensive development and testing. Investigations on the appropriate routes for the first application have led to the inclusion of the TRANSRAPID Berlin-Hamburg connection into the German Transportation Infrastructure Plan. The non-contact levitation-guidance technology with controllable forces, as well as the friction-free propulsion integrated into the track leads to low track loads, flexible route parameters, excellent dynamic vehicle behaviour and a high utilization rate for track and vehicle at moderate operating costs. For the TRANSRAPID, the resulting effects are an economically and ecologically favourable operation with speeds of up to at least 400 km/h and the particular suitability of reducing short-range air traffic and long-haul road traffic in cooperation with the standard railway, in accordance with transport policy aims. These qualities could be proved by the investigation on the Berlin-Hamburg route by the German Ministries for Research and Technology and for Transport. For this reason, this project can largely be organised and financed privately. Financial and operational concepts should still be passed in 1993, and full operation is planned for 2002. The TRANSRAPID is an example of how economical and ecological goals can be reached through the application of new technologies.
