Engine Design Philosophy Tailored to Regional Aircraft Application

Zusammenfassung:
In early 1990 MTU and Pratt and Whitney started the study work for the RTF180, a turbofan engine that was to be tailored to the Regional Aircraft market. This paper is an attempt to summarize all the major considerations which finally led to the design philosophy of this engine. The term Regional Aircraft in this paper generally is being applied to 70-140 seat aircraft, however, refers not primarily to the seat capacity but more to the operational characteristics of these aircraft. This is done because the latter is mainly driving the engine design while the number of seats then is more a matter of thrust. The operation spectrum of Regional Aircraft, the present market conditions and future regulatory developments are being outlined. The resulting design objectives and criteria for a Regional Jet engine are summarized and completed by an overview of the numerous detail studies that are necessary to get a well-balanced engine design. Finally it is demonstrated how the defined design philosophy has been translated into engine hardware by describing the major powerplant features.
