With increasing environmental awareness globally, the influence of aircraft engine exhaust emissions both around airports and at altitude has come under investigation. This paper considers the impact of these emissions upon the environment and reviews the understanding of the contribution made by aircraft engines. The historical achievements and future prospects for reducing engine emissions are discussed, including the often conflicting requirements, associated with each emission species, and more widely with the established requirements of combustor performance. Differences in the environmental impact and engine technology of smaller aircraft, often used in regional operations, are discussed.
