Environmental Aspects of Regional Air Traffic

Zusammenfassung:
As the growth of civil aviation will continue in coming years the environmental impact of air transport deserves great attention. The main components of this impact are aircraft noise and engine exhaust emissions. This paper describes that considerable reductions have been achieved concerning aircraft noise, so that in spite of increasing traffic the 67 dB(A) noise protection zones of airports which are used in German noise protection regulations do not grow. It is demonstrated how the impact of exhaust emissions of aircraft engines depends upon the altitudes at which they occur. Especially above the tropopause engine emissions interfere with aerochemical processes which can influence the greenhouse effect and the ozone layer adversely with damaging results for our climate and harmful increases of UV-radiation on the earth surface. ICAO, the European Community and National Governments have developed and are developing regulations to limit and reduce the environmental impact of air transport. An outline of the various international and national regulations is given. Finally the contributions of regional air traffic to aviations environmental impact is considered and it is shown that this contribution is of minor magnitude and importance, as regional aircraft fleets consist mainly of small low-flying turboprop aircraft.
