The Role of Today's Regional Traffic

Zusammenfassung:
egional air traffic plays an increasingly important role in the air transport system. Liberalization of air transport, the reunification of Germany and the opening of Eastern Europe allow access to new markets and provide the potential for an economically sound development of regional air traffic. The prime functions of regional air traffic are to provide feeder services out of the regions to the main traffic hubs, and to offer direct air services between the regions, whilst at the same time partially relieving the increasingly congested traffic hubs from transit traffic. In order to gain general acceptance, regional air traffic must achieve a high level of safety, reliability and regularity, and in this context requires the support of the larger scheduled air carriers, the airports, the air nav1gat1on services, and the appropriate State authorities. Coordination and close cooperation between regional operators and the larger air carriers in the operational, technical and commercial fields will be of mutual benefit and will increase efficiency and cost effectiveness. Regional airports and airfields in Germany total 32. In 1992 they handled well over one million aircraft movements. Regional air traffic thus significantly contributes to an integrated overall transport concept.
