Titel:

Direct Numerical Simulation of Transition to Turbulence in the Blasius Boundary-Layer

Zusammenfassung:
Transition to turbulence in the Blasius boundary layer is investigated by temporal numerical simulations which are carried out in a moving frame of reference taking into account the spatial development of the laminar base flow and the local Reynolds number. The transition process is computed from the initial linear disturbance development through the nonlinear stages up to breakdown to turbulence. Although the accuracy of the present results suffers from insufficient resolution in the late transitional and turbulent stages, the main features of the flow development are described correctly. Moreover, comparably inexpensive simulations using a very coarse resolution (only a few modes) in the wall-parallel directions appear to be suitable for estimating the location of transition.
