Titel:

Suppression of Acoustic Shock Waves in a Tunnel by an Array of Helmholtz Resonators

Zusammenfassung:
This paper discusses an effect of an array of Helmholtz resonators connected to a tunnel axially in order to suppress emergence of acoustic shock waves from pressure disturbances generated by travelling of high-speed trains. A case with extremely high pressure level is examined, in particular, by taking account of the nonlinear loss due to the jet flow formed on leaving an orifice of the resonators throat. On the basis of the governing equations including the wall friction, the spatial evolution is examined numerically for two typical types of pressure disturbances. The array of Helmholtz resonators is proven to be very effective if suitably designed. But it is found that the nonlinear loss always remains secondary in suppression of shock waves and it rather contributes mainly to enhancement of decay of the pressure in the cavity of the resonators.
