The dynamics of flexible space structures may be analyzed using finite element or multibody system codes. The fonner do not meet the requirement of shon execution times appearing in many applications and some of the latter codes yield wrong results in certain situations because of forgetting to incorporate geometric stiffening effects. This paper shows how to model general flexible bodies in multibody systems by including geometric stiffening and it presents an efficient method for evaluating the geometric stiffening terms. The method makes multibody simulation codes for dynamic analysis much faster than finite element codes as shown for typical examples.
