Procedures for Substructure Coupling Analysis Based on Experimental Data

The dynamic behavior of large complex structures is often analysed by substructuring techniques where the substructures are modelled seperately and the final system analysis uses a variety of techniques to couple the substructure models. In the paper two approaches have been applied to study the system analysis results using substructure test data. One approach is characterized by substructure models which are completely or mainly based on test data (direct experimental substructuring techniques) whereas in the other approach test data are only used to improve the substructure analytical models by automatic updating procedures and where the subsequent coupled analysis is performed on pure analytical basis (indirect experimental substructuring technique). In the paper advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches are discussed using the results obtained from a simulated and a real test structure which was tested on substructure level as well as on system level.
