The present paper addresses the optimisation of structures subject to constraints on natural frequency. This requires the calculation of second derivatives of the frequency constraint, which in turn depends on the calculation of design sensitivities of eigen-vectors. It ls shown that eigenvectors corresponding to a modified system or, equivalently, their design sensitivities may be calculated economically and to sufficient accuracy using a truncated set of modal basis vectors, provided the basis is augmented by suitable Ritz vectors.
