Recent Developments in Structural Optimization with Respect to Dynamic and Aeroelasticity Problems

The structural optimization program system called MBB-LAGRANGE has been developed with special emphasis on aeroelastic capabilities from the very beginning. In addition to a summary of all implemented features new methods in view of aeroelasticity, dynamic and flutter are presented in this paper. An efficient approach to solve large scale static aeroelastic problems and a new method for flutter investigations will be given for analyses and for sensitivity analyses as well. For the solution of the static aeroelastic problem mainly an iterative method is used. A short description of the methods for dynamic analysis including sensitivity analysis follows. During the flutter iteration process all the mathematical behaviour, especially gradients of the flutter equations, will be exploited. Two-dimensional interpolation of the unsteady aerodynamics in view of both Mach number and reduced frequency at the same time avoids interpolation of the flutter results. This is an important fact performing the sensitivity analysis, which requires steady functions for differentiation. The influence of the number of assumed modes on the accuracy of the flutter results and gradients will be shown. Some examples are shown, which depict the successful application of the optimization program system MBB-LAGRANGE. Finally, an outlook will be given on the necessary development of additional algorithms and procedures to treat the future tasks in an efficient manner.
