Numerical Investigation of Dynamic Stall on Oscillating Airfoils

The challenging problem of unsteady separation and vortex shedding on a moving airfoil which is known as Dynamic Stall is investigated by means of a numerical method based on the 2d-Reynolds-averaged NavierStokes equations. The approximate factorisation implicit method of Beam and Warming is applied for this problem including appropriate boundary conditions and artificial viscosity terms. Detailed comparisons between calculated and experimental data for both sinusoidal and ramp-type motions show good correspondence during development and shedding of the Dynamic Stall vortex. Differences occur in the poststall regime which must be further investigated in the future.
