Zusammenfassung:
Hypersonic flows of interest in the context or current prototype technologies under discussion and development involve several coupled physico-chemical phenomena occurring in high-temperature multicomponent gas mixtures. Since a complete experimental Simulation or these complex phenomena is not yet feasible with current facilities there is an increasing emphasls on elaborate numerical means to tackle the relevant problems with the help of supercomputers. An adequale numerical treatment or lhe typical hypersonic phenomena or interest is critically dependent on their reliable physical modelling and accurale experimental physico-chemical data on the modelling parameters as essential inputs. In this regard there is a wide variation and uncertainty in available data and the associated models. In order to get around this unsatisfactory situation it is proposed to lest the various models ror the basic physico-chemical phenomena and thermophysical properties with respect to their influence on practically relevant global quantities such as heat transfer and skin friction in a relatively simple basic configuration such as Couette flow. It is hoped thereby to contribute towards an understanding or the complex interaction or the various physico-chemical mechanisms involved and their relative importance so that some tractable models and simplifications for numerical and experimental studies can be identified. The pioneering work or Clarke on Couette now was based on analytically useful approximations such as constant Prandtl and · Lewis numbers and Lighthills ideal dissociating gas (IDG) model. We report here briefly some preliminary results on these and more general models.
