Zusammenfassung:
The European Astronauts Centre (EAC) in Cologne is a new ESA establishment responsible for the definition of the selection and qualification criteria of future European astronauts, the coordination of their training , the assignment of astronauts to flights and ground activities, crew safety matters, as well as for astronauts support and medical surveillance during training and flights. A decentralised concept of six European dedicated astronauts training facilities is foreseen. In addition, European astronauts will be trained in engineering support facilities, operations facilities and user centres, as well as in facilities provided by the International Partners of the international Space Station Freedom programme. The typical astronauts training cycle as either Spaceplane Specialist or Laboratory Specialist comprises 1 year of Basic Training, 1 1/2 years of Specialised Training and 1 1/2 years Mission Training. In a first recruitment cycle up to ten astronauts will be selected for the European Astronauts Corps in the second half of 1991.
