The COLUMBUS Element Centers are important facilities within the Ground Segment of the In-Orbit Infrastructure and will provide continuous operations support during the lifetime of the COLUMBUS elements Free Flying Laboratory and Attached Laboratory. The centers will maintain the expertise of the COLUMBUS industrial consortium necessary to provide support to other Ground Segment entities for mission/ increment planning, preparation, and execution, and for training of astronauts. This will be achieved by implementing engineering support, payload integration support, and integrated logistics support functions within the Element Centers. These functions will be provided in both centers tailored to the needs of the Free Flying Laboratory and the Attached Laboratory, and will have close links to each other and will use common facilities to the extent possible. The architectural design of the centers will make maximum use of equipment and tools developed in the COLUMBUS C/D program such as the flight configurations engineering models, ground support equipment, simulation facilities, S/W development facilities, and communication equipment. The centers building requirements are mainly addressing office space, control rooms, conference rooms, high bay type clean rooms, workshops and warehouse. The implementation schedule is based on the launch dates of the Free Flying Laboratory and of the Attached Laboratory.
