The paper explains the reasons for the transition from the current European Ariane 4 launcher towards the more powerful Ariane 5 launcher. Ariane 5 is complemented by the Hermes spaceplane for manned space missions. The future European space transportation system is characterised by the distinction into unmanned and manned utilisation. The lay-out and performance of the Hermes spaceplane is presented and compared with other classical or futuristic concepts.
