Zusammenfassung:
New results for premixed combustion of propane / air mixtures with different flame stabilisers are presented. These, together with a range of data from the literature show that premixed combustion does not necessarily have ultra low NO emissions, often has a combustion efficiency problem and always has a stability problem. Ultra low No emissions generally cannot be achieved due to stability and efficiency problems. A range of designs are presented that use direct fuel injection at the stabiliser plane into the base of round jet or swirling jet shear layers. These are shown to have a wider stability than premixed systems and the ability to achieve ultra low NOx emissions without an efficiency problem. NO emission index results below 1 are demonstrated for propane at 600K and l bar pressure. Finally, one of the designs, a radial swirler, is shown to have low NOx emissions which can be reduced further by changing the fuel placement. NO emissions as low as 1 and 7 ppm NOx (0.1 and 0.7 Ef), at 15% oxygen and 1 bar pressure are demonstrated for propane and kerosene respectively, without an efficiency problem.
