International Standards governing emissions from civil aircraft engines take account of technical feasibility and economic reasonableness factors. The paper reviews the background to the development of the current ICAO standards (Annex 16, Val II, 1981), the achievements of the worlds engine manufacturers in meeting these standards, possible changes to the standards and the inplications of such changes.
