Zusammenfassung:
The total air transport system consists of many components, the main parts being the military and the civil aviation which consists again of the commercial air transportation with scheduled and charter air services and of the non-commercial or general aviation. Whereas general aviation can be regarded as a means of flying primarily for private and leisure purposes of individuals - however, business travel by company owned aircraft belongs to general a viation as well - it is the commercial air transportation which serves the general public as a transport mode providing national and international services. In this paper is described the structure and development of demand for scheduled and charter services of the commercial air transportation system. Hand in hand with economic growth, growing importance and availability of leisure time, and with technological progress in aviation demand for air transportation has grown considerably world wide, and this growth was generally stronger than that for the more "classical" modes bus, car, and rail. For instance doubled the German air traffic demand within the last 16 years ( 1972-1988) from 12 million to 24 million Journeys per year. The first part of the paper describes the methodology of the forecast of German air transport demand worked out by DLR. As a result is shown nearly a doubling of air transport demand up to the year 2000 compared to 1986. The second part gives informations with respect to world wide development of air transport demand, aircraft fleet, and a comparison of several forecasts of air transport demand.
