A brief introductory status report of the first Saturn booster is given. In terms of major exploration programs, families of space vehicles are classified, beginning at the lower end with modified ballistic missiles of varying power and added upper stages and leading to the man-rated vehicles of the Saturn-Nova series. The technological advances on a broad scientific-technical-industrial front are shown in the areas of structures, guidance and control, design features of composite vehicles, associated liquid and solid propulsion systems, fabrication, launching as well as handling. Additional benefits arising from the progress in the development of vehicles for instrumented exploration and manned flight are economical, technological, of a general nature, an expansion of the global communications and weather services.
