Titel:

On the Dynamic Longitudinal Stability of Sailplanes with fixed and free Controls

Autor(en):
P. Morelli
Zusammenfassung:
The characteristics of the longitudinal motion of a sailplane following a disturbance of its longitudinal equilibrium are theoretically investigated, with the "stick fixed" and "stick free" assumption. The system of simultaneous differential equations is solved by means of an electronic analog computer, introducing numerical values for the derivatives relating to a "standard" sailplane. The analysis has been carried out in two cases: airbrakes retracted and airbrakes fully extended. Damping and period characteristics of the oscillatory motion are calculated for different centre-of-gravity positions. The results are discussed with particular reference to the maximum attainable airspeed in the free oscillation as might occur in the case of loss of control of the sailplane in cloud flying.
