The physical processes which occur at high temperatures in materials are to a large extent dependent upon the nature of the stressing system. Stress and thermal cycling, and complex conditions generally, give rise to effects which cannot be derived from simple static or isothermal data. In particular, metallurgical transformations of one kind or another may be promoted or retarded, and these may have serious consequences. The fundamental metallurgical knowledge relating to these effects is reviewed, and its possible influence on the methods of design and prediction is examined.
