Titel:

An Evaluation of VTOL Aircraft Concepts

Autor(en):
P.L. Michel
Zusammenfassung:
During the past 10 years much work has been devoted to VTOL aircraft, and a great variety of configurations has been tried. One conclusion is clear: to make a conventional aircraft really STOL (50 m take-off or less) so much power is needed that it might be simpler to make the aircraft VTOL and take full advantage of VTOL flight characteristics. VTOL/STOL aircraft are analysed with regard to fuel consumption, rotor down-wash, and payload for a variety of missions and the conclusion shows that for the overwhelming majority of civil and military missions the pure helicopter has important advantages over other known VTOL/STOL aircraft with regard to fuel economy, sound, extended hovering ability, and payload.
