The paper deals with the limits of application of electric and hydraulic servos and actuators in autopilot systems of modern airplanes. The various factors which must be considered in arriving at an optimum selection for a particular application arc analysed to determine th~ir effect on the overall decision. These factors include consideration of: the primary control system configuration, performance criteria, weight, safety, maintenance, economics, and customer preference. Also considered are the advantages and disadvantages of introducing autopilot control signals by means of a dual input surface actuator.
